TQ How to make a cute Ocean Ball with resin

Wow... I did it... I managed to make a small little ocean paradise in a resin ball! Yipee!!! I've been doing a lot of research online to capture the scene of the beach and the ocean into a resin piece of jewelry or keychain. Being a beach and ocean lover, I really missed the opportunity to go to the beach, feel the sand and touch the water....

This was also one of the most complicated work I've created so far. You can imagine my skillset given that I find this complicated. (Hee hee...) I had to do many different layerings within the resin ball and I was worried that the exterior will not be smooth and the interior will have layers that are too noticeable. Luckily, the 2 'Ocean balls' I created turned out just fine...

Previously, I've tried to work on resin creations on a similar theme. I've worked on a couple of 'Waves' necklaces where I tried to create the blue waves effect within a resin pendant. This is during my very early days of resin craft and I was playing around with resin colors. Some of the pieces turned out well, but I've also damaged quite a number of them as the 'waves' just turned into a blue blotch. Haha...

Then after practicing a little, I tried to make a little custom keychain for my husband for his birthday. This was very difficult for me at that point in time. I only managed to put just some 'sprinkles' of sand and 2 tiny seashells in. And I also added his name into the keychain.

My friend in Singapore saw my work, she likes it and asked if I can custom something along the 'Ocean' theme for her and she asked for 2 pieces... I started to panic as my skills are not good enough to do a custom request. That is why I've started to watch a lot of videos from the seasoned crafters to learn how they can make a really beautiful one.

I call this creation 'Journey Home'; which is '回家‘ in Chinese. I had this picture in my head, I recalled my wonderful experience at Hawaii (Recently I posted a blog and video about my skydiving trip there)

And I remembered all my wonderful memories of Hawaii 6 years ago... That was like a piece of paradise for me. And I also remembered the sea turtles that I was right next to in the ocean. I wanted to create a little piece of resin with the sea turtle swimming and coming home. And I happened to have a very cute gold charm of a sea turtle that I can use.

Materials to use:

  • UV Resin
  • UV Colors (Blue & White)
  • UV Lamp
  • Sand
  • Mini seashells
  • Mini charms as fillers (Starfish, shells, etc)
  • 10mm Gold Cap
  • 4x8mm Gold Screw eye pin
  • Silicon Mold (Ball)
  • Silicon Cups
  • Silicon Sticks or stirring sticks
  • Resin Brush
  • Nail Buffer
  • Mini spoon
  • Plier
  • Cutter

So I made the first one by creating the surface of the ball (Like an aquarium) and took it out of the silicon mold and did my layers there as shown in the video at the top. This is the first time I'm using this method as I wanted to video the process of the layering and want it to be visible. It is a viable method, the only issue was that I probably did not cure the exterior enough. As a result of the handling throughout the layering process, the ball became 'dirty' and was no longer glossy and clear. I had to do a coating to bring the shine back.

I did a second one inside the silicon mold using the same techniques of the layering. You can see in this second video, the exterior of the ball was shiny and glossy after I've completed the full curing. The only thing was that it was all done inside the mold, you can't really see how the ball will look like when you do the layering.

I'll probably try 1 or 2 more times before getting to work on the creation for what my friend had asked of me. I'm hoping to create different hues of the blue ocean the next time as well.

Hope you enjoyed this blog and do try out the resin project!

Love

TQ
